Setting Goals Works

by taoski on August 26, 2008

- -> red_home_page_logo.gifAs part of the couch to 5k plan you have to enter into a race. Running 3 times a week is all good and well - but why are you doing it? (apart from to get fit).

I have entered “The Big Fun Run” at Milton Keynes which happens on the 12th of October - so that gives me enough time to work up to the full 5k run.

My workout has now increased to running 7 minutes at a time with a 5 minute breather/spit phlegm in the bushes break in between. And again - it was not too hard to complete. Maybe this training thing really works!

I have to run for 15 minutes on Friday though - and considering it kind of clashes with a party starting at 6pm - I might be getting up early in the morning that day to do it. Thats going to be a killer.

I used my new Belkin iPhone Sports Batman Utility Belt on Monday for the first time and it worked a treat. I could not decide which music to listen to so I settled for a comedy podcast of Radio 4’s “The Now Show”. Trying to run whilst giggling a little was fun too. I have downloaded an application for the iPhone which allows you to enter a total time and then interval times too - so I can set it for 7 minutes running and 5 minutes walking and then it repeats. It’s cool too as it vibrates the iPhone and sends a “ding! ding! Round 1″ type noise over the earphones to let you know when to start/stop.

I might need to spend some money on some different headphones or an adaptor of some sort though as my headphones kept falling out of my right ear (not the left for some reason!). Now all I need to do is work on planning my 5k route around the local area. Google Earth will help.

First Running Milestone Reached

by taoski on August 23, 2008

I have been following the Go from couch to 5k in 6 weeks running plan and have reached the first milestone of running for 10 minutes non-stop!  I mapped it out on Google Earth and the distance came to about 1.16 miles which is about right for my current running speed.  Half a mile in 5 minutes.

Up til now I have been running for 5 minutes at a time with 5 minutes cool down in between.  I have actually been doing this first step for 2 weeks to get my stamina up as going from nothing to running is actually a bit of a killer.  I have been completing a course of aproximately 2.6 miles with 15 minutes total running and 15 minutes cool down.

The run for 10 minutes was not too much effort to be honest.  I was only troubled by the fact that my timer on my iPhone might have gone wrong and that I was running further than needed!

According to the plan, next week I will be running for 7 minutes at a time with 5 minutes cool down in between and then for a total of 15 minutes at the end of the week.  I am no Usain Bolt though so I might string this one out for 2 weeks with the final run being 15 minutes.  I will have to see how I get on.  7 minutes running will not be an issue though I think - but I might swap to doing a 5 minute warm up walk first rather than running straight away.

I am getting my Belkin iPhone Sports Armband today too, so I will no longer have just the rhythmical slosh-slosh-slosh of my water bottle to run to.

Any suggestions for some good running music?

Run Fat Boy Run

by taoski on August 19, 2008

No… not the average film that kind of signaled the downturn in of the career of one of our better comedy writers and actors.

I mean I have started running again!

Like Damo, I have started on the couch-to-5k in 6 weeks plan and am currently at the run for 5 minutes, walk for 5 minutes stage. I can complete 15 minutes of running in total at the moment which, with 15 minutes of walking takes me to about 2.5 miles in total with 1.5 of that as the running portion.

I am already pleasantly pleased with my achievements and have bought myself a pair of Nike Running Shoes as my other Nike trainers were way off the mark for a set of running shoes. I am already feeling that the first 5 minutes goes very easily and I could push on for a few more - but I am not pushing myself at the moment. I am a fat slob - and I need to take it slowly.

I am already looking at getting a Belkin iPhone Sports Armband as I use my iPhone to time my running/walking - but would also love to get the Nike Plus sports kit or a Garmin Forerunner GPS watch to track where I go and time my runs properly.

But thats all too much too soon. Typical me. Getting stuff before I am properly into it.

All I need is my shoes and a bottle of water and thats it. That’s one of the things I like about running. No hassle getting the bike out of the shed or the tension of going to the gym just because I have paid the joining fees up front.

I just need to find a good stretching routine now.
I will let you know how I get on.

Outsourcing - or how to piss of your staff and customers

by taoski on August 7, 2008

Outsourcing - a bedtime story.

Johnny has 10 apples - but he can’t hold them all at the same time - but he want’s to keep them nearby so he can get them to sell when he needs them.

Johnny sells 5 apples to his mate, Fred who holds those apples for him and passes them over for a price when asked.

After a week or so, Fred’s Dad comes along, sees that Fred is taking up too much time and effort holding the apples for Johnny and replaces Fred with a cardboard box. Fred can now go and see his other mate Jim who has some Oranges he needs holding.

Johnny can still get his apples, but is a bit miffed that Fred is not there to pass them to him. Johnny actually has to get the apples out of the box himself which is too time consuming and is loosing him money through loss of sales. Johnny complains to Fred’s Dad.

Fred’s Dad comes along and cuts a side of the box away and throws it in the bin so that Johnny can get the apples easier. Johnny is happy. Fred’s Dad is happy too as he can now pay for a smaller box, one with only 3 sides!

Fred comes back with his Oranges and shows them to his Dad. His Dad has the great idea of putting the 2 together and puts the Oranges in the box with the Apples. Now Johnny is pissed off again as he has to wait for the Oranges to get out of the way to get his apples from the box.

Fred’s Dad is happy though. He now has a box with 3 sides full of Apples and Oranges! He doesn’t have to pay for another box for the oranges!

Fred’s Dad is called away on business and his Uncle, Bill comes to take over control of the box. He sees the box full of Apples and Oranges and he also sees Johnny and Jim using the box to get their fruit. Aha! Thinks Bill. I can make it easier if I take away the box and put the apples on the floor. This will make it easier for Johnny and Jim to get their Apples and Oranges and I can save money by not owning the box! Great.

Johnny and Jim are not happy. They have to fight to get their fruit now. There is no-one giving it to them. It is not in a nice box (with 3 sides) and they are just rolling around on the floor not in one place or another. They complain to Bill who has a great idea.

I’ve got this other box! It’s bigger than the one you had before! It’s only got 2 sides on which will make it easier for you to get your Fruit and it is already being used by 2 other people to manage their Fruit aswell! And - it won’t cost you any more money!

Johnny and Jim are happy! They get their box back. They get their fruit when they need it. But they have to wade through the Bananas and Pears to get them though.

The 2 guys who own the Bananas and Pears get pissed off. They now have too much other fruit in their box to deal with and complain to Bill. But Bill has gone off on business and his wife, Judy, has taken his place.

Judy has the answer!

She will cut off a side of the box to allow them to get their fruit out easier!

Johnny, Jim and the 2 other fruit sellers are happier, but alot of their fruit is now falling out of the box and they are not quite sure how many pieces of fruit they have left. It’s all a bit of a mess.

Johnny has had enough. He buys back his 5 pieces of fruit and puts them in his pocket to hold them. Jim does the same.

Johnny is happy as he has all his fruit back in his control. Jim is the same.

Judy is happy too. She just sold back the fruit at a bigger price than Fred bought it at in the first place!

Job done.
