Yesterday was the first time since June this year that I have been back to the building I used to work in. I went to drop off a PC I repaired for someone.
Within seconds I felt immediately back at home and people that I have not seen for nearly half a year were greeting me with an "alright mate…" type greeting as if I had never left! I was expecting to be asked to help someone at any point!
I worked in that building for about 13 years and know it inside out. Being responsible for network cabling and PC stuff there I almost know each part of the building intimately. It's an odd feeling.
After chatting to a few ex-colleagues I left (who also greeted me with a "hello… oh! Hello!" as if they were not suprised to see me) before sprinting down the stairs as I have done several thousand times before and "dinging" the two fire extinguishers with my fingernails as I walked past them - which I have also done every time I walked past several thousand times before.
I don't miss the work. I do miss the people and I do miss the opportunity to doss the afternoon off on the internet, phone or Photoshop.
Well, it's not a giant lizard slaying robot and its not a new religion.

Frightening isn’t it? You think you’d never miss it - and then you do… and you can’t go back. Currently I’m NOT thinking in those terms!
I know what you mean. I’ve been at my place now for 12 years and as you say know the building intimately.
I currently can’t imagine being somewhere else.
When I joined I was the youngest in the building, now there are clerks working there of whom I could be their father!
I haven’t been back to the hamster cage I worked in, but suspect a similar odd feeling when I do.
There again, I will hopefully be pissed.
When you say “there are clerks working there of whom I could be their father” Ghone, you’re speaking hypothetically right?
right?
Taoski,
I know the feeling I went back after four weeks and it felt wierd going there, everyone spoke and the banter began again! Those were the best days that we are ever going to experience, I was there a lot longer than you so it seems even stranger for me.
If I ever got the chance to return then I would without hesitation.
I’ve just seen that picture of Cookster with a Jellyfish stuck on top of his head on his blog site. On second thoughts, you can cart me off to my old employer any time!
