Our household is very excited about the incoming release of Halo 3 ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper)!

I would love to be able to get one of these replica Spartan HALO helmets to show the kids. It almost out ranks my desire to buy a full size star wars stormtropper suit.

We (the boys in the family) got the new Guitar Hero World Tour box set with the guitar, drum kit and microphone for Christmas.

I hooked it up to the Xbox 360 and my 17 year old nephew jumped on the drums and started pumping hell out of the pedal and smashing the drum pads to death.

After a while he reported that the bass pedal was not working - and had never worked!

I checked the connections - all ok.  Checked the set up and tested it in the "create your own band" area of the game - still no joy.

So had it ever worked?  Who knows!  I could play the set without the bass pedal working, but I want that 100% rating on Hotel California damn it!

I did some web searching (via the iPhone) and found various people complaining about the drum kit not working properly and the sensitivity of certain pads not being right, but only a few complaints about the bass pedal not working.

Seeing as I had recycled the packaging and my kids had stuck stickers all over the kit, I was not in a good position to take the stuff back to where I purchased it from so I undertook the repair of the item myself!

1. Turn the pedal upside down.
2. Pull off the grey sticky pad near the front of the pedal (where the wire comes out).
3. Unscrew the 2 screws hidden behind it.
4. Remove the circular part of the pedal where the pedal comes down to meet the base.
5. Inside you will find a small receiver with 2 wires attached.  One wire will be attached to the outside ring and one to the inside.  The actual connections will be covered with glue.
6. Scrape off the glue with a small screwdriver or childs finger and pull the wires off (remember which one was which).
7. Remove all of the glue that is left.
8. I held the wires in place on the connectors with some brown tape whilst I tested the pedal and found that one of the connections must have not been made correctly.
9. Either solder the wires on (requires advanced skills of Zen patience) or bind them in place with some strong sellotape.
10. Screw it all back together.
11. Replace the sticky pad (should still be sticky!).
12. Drum!

I might post some pics of the repair job I did if anyone is interested in seeing how it was done.

After my 360 developed the dreaded Red Ring Of Death, I logged a warranty call with Microsoft and sat back expecting a box to arrive in the post to package up the poorly console and send it off to the Xbox Hospital.

After a month of waiting, I called them only to find out that a box is not actually sent by them - I have to print off some labels and get UPS to come pick it up and take it away with their blue lights flashing.

So I got the nice chappie to log me another call and I was emailled the UPS labels which I had to print out within 10 days and arrange for them to come.  15 days later procrastination was still winning and my console was still dead.

I had read before of "The Towel Method" of fixing the RROD and decided to give it a go.

1. Get the 360 and disconnect the hard disk.
2. Lay it on top of a large towel.
3. Wrap it up in the towel so that nothing can be seen of the console at all.
4. Plug it into the power with nothing else connected
5. Turn on, and bake for 15 minutes

I suppose that the theory is to deep-fry the components in the hope that some of the broken solder joints or what ever get warm enough to re-connect.

And...

So... it's come to this.

I just finish Call Of Duty 4 and get ready for some serious online multiplayer killing and my xbox decides to go tits on me and display the dreaded Red Ring Of Death when I power it on.

Like a good corporate Microsoft bitch I logged it with their Xbox Repair website knowing full well that this particular issue is a common one and therefore forced Microsoft to give an extra 2 years warranty on top of the usual year.

I now await the Xbox Coffin to arrive to spirit it away to the Xbox Hospital to be mended. Hopefully they will seek pity on me and send back one of the slightly newer hardware revision models with a nice juicy HDMI port on too!

I can only hope.  They will probably pre-load Vista 360 onto it and that will be the end of my gaming days, as the included joypad won't have any working drivers!

Wow, a major milestone has passed in my life.

I have actually completely finished a computer game in Single Player mode!

Call Of Duty 4 is a totally excellent game and the graphics look amazing when running in top-notch VGA mode on my LCD TV. Even though the single player mission only lasted 4.5 hours - it was still a great story, good fun and bloodthirsty.

I recently posted about my upgrade week encompassing installing OS X Leopard on my MacBook and also the new update for the Xbox 360 that allowed DiVx content to play.After spending a few weeks with OS X Leopard, I have decided to uninstall and move back to using Tiger, the previous version instead for the following reasons:

• Too slow - I just found that with my measly 512mb of RAM, my MacBook was just not as responsive and as quick as it used to be. Even with the Dashboard disabled and the 3D dock busted back to 2D it was still sluggish.
• Wifi Issues - since the update to Leopard, my wireless connection seemed to be searching, connecting, scanning, searching... all the time. There are grumbles about this issue on the web but all of the fixes I attempted never worked. Back to Tiger - all is fine again.
• Unused New Features - the features like Quick Look, Stacks and Cover Flow were all very nice, but not essential to my use of the MacBook. I was able to quickly search through all of my JPG files to try and find one particular image using Cover Flow, but I could have achieved the same result by using the normal search results. The new version of Safari is nice and I will miss that most of all. Both Spaces and Time Machine were not anywhere on my radar.

At the moment I am running a very basic OS X installation with nothing apart from the following applications installed:

• Transmission - The best OS X BitTorrent client - link
• Perian - a collection of codecs for Quicktime - link
• Burn - for converting videos and creating DVDs - link
• Quicksilver - an application launcher - link

Whilst OS X Leopard is a good and solid update for the Apple systems, it's not for me at the moment.

It's ugrade week here in the Megatao camp.

Tuesday saw the release of the Xbox 360 "fall dashboard update" which brings DivX and Xvid playback to the console with a host of other new features .  Microsoft have even seen sense and allowed the content to be played from USB memory devices and data CDs and DVDs too.  If only the 360 wasn't so noisy , it might replace my aging Xbox1 and the perfect Xbox Media Centre app.

Wednesday was "upgrade to Leopard" day!

I have now updated my Macbook to run Leopard , the latest (and greatest) version of the OS X operating system.  The upgrade went smoothly without any issues (after I freed up some hard disk space) and I am now taming the beast that is Leopard.

My first impressions are positive.  It does seem a little slower to operate - so some more RAM might be on the cards once I have had a good poke around to make sure nothing is stopping it from running properly, but it kept all my settings, preferences and files too!

I had even disabled the OS X Dashboard to give my Macbook a performance boost and it left that disabled after the update too!  I have already changed the dock from 3d back to 2d though as it does seem to be a bit of a memory hog.

What will I upgrade next?

Microsoft have just stepped one BIG step closer to "droppin' da bomb" on Sony and the PS3 by announcing support for Xvid and DivX codecs within their Media Center Extender software.

The software runs on your PC and can push content to Media Center devices such as the Xbox360.  Support for Divx and Xvid has been available before using various hacks/transcodes and workarounds, but if the Xbox360 gets this as part of its Fall Dashboard Update (already rumoured to be true) then this will kill the PS3.

Well.. until Sony add support for it anyway.

I knew there would be a good reason not to get my Xbox360s DVD drive modded to play copied content.

Looks like Microsoft have now found a way to ban consoles that contain modded firmware and dodgy components.  I knew it would come at some point and am glad I never went down that route now.  £40 well not spent in my opinion!

Shame my 12 Month Xbox Live Gold Membership has expired recently, but to be honest I haven't been online for a while.  I might get the Xbox Live Vision Camera and 12 month Live subscription pack from Play.com soon - especially as you get a copy of Uno with it too.
