Blog April - Day 1

What does a father do on a sunny, lazy sunday?

Wash the car of course!

Having the kids help was not quite a hindrance as I thought it would be and after they had done “the sponge bit” they were happy to play in the boot whilst I hoovered, buffed and polished. I have owned that car for over 18 months and I think that is the 4th clean it has ever had by my hand! I’m not really any good with cars. Next week I might put some oil in before the engine siezes. It’s never had any extra of that in there in the 18 months either! Its either a good sign that Citroen make good, reliable cars or that I have been extremely lucky and also extremely stupid!

I also spent some time researching how to create a bookmarklet for the Safari browser that comes with OS X. The bookmarklet needed to be able to remove a certain piece of HTML code from a page on a forum I frequent, where for some reason Safari decides not to display some text, whereas Firefox does. I did find some good resources, but fell short of getting it to work - yet!

I also read a comparison of OS X browsers yesterday which rated OmniWeb as the fastest in a series of page rendering tests. I have downloaded the demo and it is pretty good. Certainly not as memory hungry as Firefox but better featured than Safari. However, it also suffers from the same HTML issue on the forum and the chat portion of Gmail is missing - as per Safari too. Perhaps I should start looking into the Intel optimised builds of Firefox, Camino or WebKit.

On a lighter note, Lost is on tonight and I am looking forward to it. Its nice to have it on a Sunday night. I usually forget it is on until about 6pm whilst cooking the dinner. Then I remember and I get all excited and pleased. A bit like I used to when Last Of The Summer Wine was on when I was a child.

Lost remains the ONLY television show that I watch regularly. In fact I think I could go without a TV completely and just live on internet video downloads, podcasts, Radio 4 and iTunes. Michael at the Apple Gazette site is currently into Day 6 of 30, of living with only the new Apple TV instead of his cable box. Makes interesting reading. I wonder how he will be doing by the end?
